Flight Booking Cancellation

Plans change. Here’s exactly how cancelling a flight booked through TravelSCT works, what it costs, and how long a refund takes.

Cancelling a flight involves two separate items: the penalty the airline applies based on its own fare rules and fare class, and our service fee for processing the cancellation on your behalf. We disclose both amounts before you confirm anything, so there are no surprise charges.

Cancellation steps

Step 1

Call or email us

Reach a specialist at +1-888-832-9163 with your booking reference, or email support@travelsct.com.

Step 2

Review the penalty

We check your fare rules and quote the exact airline penalty and our service fee before doing anything.

Step 3

Confirm & receive written proof

Once you approve, we submit the cancellation and send written confirmation along with your refund or credit timeline.

What a flight cancellation typically costs

Airlines scale their cancellation penalty to the fare class you purchased. As a general reference:

Fare typeTypical airline penalty
Refundable fareLittle to no penalty; cash refund to original payment method
Standard economy (non-refundable)$100–$300 penalty; remaining value issued as airline travel credit
Basic economy / lowest bucketOften forfeited entirely; no refund or credit
International long-haul$150–$400+ penalty, remainder as travel credit, airline-dependent

Most U.S. airlines allow a full refund with no penalty if you cancel within 24 hours of booking, provided the flight departs 7 or more days later. On top of the airline penalty, our cancellation service fee runs $39–$89 per ticket, depending on airline and complexity, and is disclosed before we process your request. Full detail is in our Refund & Cancellation Policy.

Refundable vs. non-refundable fares

Some discounted and basic economy fares are sold as non-refundable from the moment of booking in exchange for a lower price. If your original booking confirmation shows a non-refundable fare, cancelling will typically return the unused value as an airline travel credit rather than cash, or in the case of basic economy, may return no value at all. We always flag the fare type at the time of booking so you can choose between a flexible or discounted fare.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a flight refund take?

Once the airline confirms your cancellation, refunds are typically issued to your original payment method within 7–20 business days, though timing varies by airline and fare type.

Can I cancel just one passenger on a shared booking?

Yes, in most cases. Removing one passenger from a multi-passenger booking is processed individually and priced according to that passenger’s fare rules, which we’ll quote before making the change.

Do I get a refund if the airline cancels my flight?

If the airline cancels your flight, its own compensation policy applies, which typically includes a full refund or rebooking on the next available flight at no extra cost. We waive our service fee for that booking in this situation.

What if I bought travel protection?

Covered cancellation reasons under your travel protection plan may be reimbursable directly through the insurer, separate from the airline and agency refund process.
